At-Home Hair Dye Color Tips and Tricks

hair dye tips

Since I’ve been coloring my hair at home for several years now, I think it’s safe to assume that I’ve had my share of hair disasters. Yup, I even had orange hair at the top of my head at one point. 🙁
Luckily, I’ve learned a lot from my experience and today I’m going to show you how to easily dye your hair by yourself without all the fuss.

Before and after color correction touch up using semi-permanent dye,

The video below will cover the following:

1. How to prepare before coloring.
2. Tools you need before, during, and after coloring.
3. How to apply haircolor step-by-step.
4. Tips to avoid haircolor disaster.
5. How to choose your color.

My hair coloring tips work best for brunettes like myself. When choosing a hair color, go with two shades lighter or darker than your current hair color. At-home hair dye is perfect if you’re doing a single process or one color. If you want to add highlights, ombres, or go from black to blonde. Seek a professional hair color technician. I don’t want to be held responsible for any mishaps. lol

Let me know if you have any other questions and I’ll address it in my future root touch-up video where I show you how to go from back hair to brown hair. I just need my hair to grow out a bit more for that video. Anyways, here’s the video tutorial. Good luck!

To sum up the video, here are my tips.
1. Wear an old shirt or button-up before you start.
2. Prep your hair by skipping shampoo the night before. Moisturized hair takes in the color better and the natural oils will protect your scalp from irritants in the dye,
3. Divide your hair into four equal quadrants to get an all-over coverage.
4. Rub petroleum jelly (vaseline) along your hairline to prevent staining.
5. Use semi-permanent hair dye if you have commitment problems. It contains no ammonia so it’s more gentle and it lasts up to 28 shampoos.
6. Wrap your hair in a plastic bag after you’re done dying your hair. This will retain the heat and helps with the dying process.
7. Use a mixing bowl and brush instead of the bottle. This will give you more control of the product.
